CORGI

CORGI (the Council for Registered Gas Installers) is the National Watchdog for Gas Safety in the United Kingdom. Their mission is to promote and enhance gas safety, standards and quality in a professional and ethical manner.

When gas is used correctly and with respect it is a safe and economical fuel. However - as with any area of expertise - people working with gas need to have the appropriate training and experience.

Also, if you use a CORGI registered installer and their work is incorrect, they can insist that they remedy that work free of charge.

If you need gas installation or maintenance work, make sure that you employ a CORGI registered installer with the appropriate training.
If you are unsure that your installer has the appropriate registration to handle your work, ask to see their ID card and check the details on the reverse.

Do Turn off the gas supply at the meter. Open doors and windows
Don't Smoke.
Use naked flames.
Turn electric switches on or off.
Upon Smelling Gas

If you need a Smart Gas Services engineer at your property, the engineer will carry out a soundness test at the meter to establish whether there is an escape on the customer side of the emergency control valve. This done, the engineer will inspect gas appliances and installations in the property, evaluating if there is any immediate danger, whether there is an "At Risk" situation, a "concern for safety" or whether the property is Safe.

Danger Signs

Properly installed appliances that are checked regularly by CORGI registered installers should be safe. However, if you notice any of the following telltale danger signs, you should switch off the appliance immediately and notify your registered installer.

Sooting around the appliance
A yellow or orange lazy flame
Excessive condensation in the room where the appliance is installed

If you suspect a gas leak or an escape of gas, call Wallwork Heating Engineers on the number above

Physical symptoms of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.
If you experience drowsiness, headaches, nausea or pains in the chest when using a gas appliance, switch it off immediately, contact a doctor and mention the possibility of CO poisoning.

Bellow are pictures of danger signs to look out for in and around fireplaces and Boilers.

CO - The Silent Killer.
Invisible, odourless and tasteless - carbon monoxide (CO) lives up to its name as the silent killer. Exposure to relatively low levels of this highly poisonous gas can cause brain damage or death.

CO can be produced where a gas appliance has not been correctly installed or maintained, or a flue or chimney has become blocked. Symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to those of viral infections and include drowsiness, weakness, headaches, nausea and pains in the chest.

If anyone in your house has any of these symptoms when using a gas appliance, stop using the appliance until it has been checked by one of our CORGI registered installers. Consult Wallwork Heating Engineers and mention the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.
